Tapestry,
Brussels (Netherlands), ca. 210 x 460 cm, mid 17th century. A massive wall hanging narrating the Biblical theme of the Judgment of Solomon, in which two women argued over a new-born child and came to King Solomon for judgment. When the king suggested that the child be divided into two, one of the women gave up her claim, whereby King Solomon recognised her as the true mother and granted the child to her. In the tapestry the events appear as a painting being presented by the artist. The lower end and shorter sides complete and original, with small areas of moth damage, cut at the top with restored braid, mounted on linen cloth, the lower right edge bearing the mark of the city of Brussels.
