A ken blade, in tachi mount - Arte asiatica

Japan, Shinshinto, dated: 8th month of the year of the ox, 1865.

Very rare, long, double-edged temple sword. Blade in good condition, hada: itame-masame; hamon: notare-suguba-noi. Tang: ubu depicting kirijiri and sujikai, three mekugiana. Signature: ‘[Keio gannen] ushi no toshi hachi gatsu Eisho no Kami suriageru’ and ‘Izumi no Kami Kaneyasu saku’. Habaki: not removable. Length of blade (nagasa): 78 cm; full length: 91 cm. Mounts (koshirae): tomaki tachi. Saya: lacquer sheath with clouds and dragon décor, partially with metal mounts, unprofessionally repaired with kojiri added in paint. Iron tsuba in Sukashi technique with two phoenixes damascened in gilt, silver and copper. 18th century. Fuchi: signed ‘Masanaga’, early 18th century, iron kashira. Tachi-Menuki: tsuka-ai decorated with large tigers with gilded stripes. One seppa not original, the other missing. (BA)
