Japan, Meiji period
Hand-embroidered in flat stitch and couching in polychrome silk thread on blue silk, two pheasant pairs in a lobed cartouche, one on the ground amongst grasses, the other on a flowering branch or in flight, with two sparrows. Cartouche framed by a dense pattern of white embroidered flowers and leaves. The outer framing to the sides and the lower margin in dark blue silk velvet, lined with cotton to reverse. Total size: 2.84 x 1.54 m. Embroidered image: 2.03 x 1.34 m. (BA)
