A figure of Begtse
Tibeto-Chinese, 18th century
Fire-gilt bronze. Dharmapala Begtse stands in pratyalidha on a separately cast lotus throne (open), swinging a sword with a scorpion hilt in his raised right hand, and with his left, raising a human heart up towards his mouth, his facial expression terrifying, with bared teeth and protruding eyes, and a crown of skulls in his tousled hair. Originally, Begtse was a Central Asian god of war, his name meaning ‘copper coat of mail’ and his clothing refer to this. Traces of red paint. Light traces of use. Height: 17 cm. (BA)
