A figure of Vajradhara
Tibet, 15th/16th century
Fire-gilt bronze. The ‘holder of the vajra’ embodies the indestructible nature of dharma. He is venerated in the Gelug School as Adibuddha, the Original Buddha, and occupies the highest position in its pantheon. With his gaze lowered, his eyes closed to form long slits, he sits enthroned on a lotus, holding vajra and ghanta across his chest. This gesture (vajrahumkaramudra) symbolises the achievement of Buddhahood via the union of wisdom and compassion. Hair painted blue-black. Hollow cast in one piece; base open. Stone and glass bead setting incomplete. Height: 15 cm. (BA)
