This old, well-used stone axe with ‘knee handle’ mounting originates from the Enga tribe in the western highlands of New Guinea, from the region around the site of Wabag.
The grey-black stone blade is well-polished and displays visible use on the front, as also on the grip of the long, wooden handle. The blade is attached at the top with a heavy, decorative rattan twine. A wooden wedge at the upper, rear end of the shaft - for fixing the blade - is missing.
First half of the 20th century; H: 74 cm, W: 28 cm (above, with blade). (ME)
