Highlands, New Guinea; Tribe: Enga: A very old, small hourglass drum 'Kundu'. - Arte Tribale

This small hand-drum originates from the Enga tribe in the western highlands of New Guinea, from the region around the site of Wabag.
This slender, hourglass-form drum was carved out of hard, brown wood, was originally coloured black and displays in its lower third a bulge all around as decoration - but no handle.
The upper covering consists of leather, and displays in the centre a black circle with 6 black knobs. This drumhead still has its original string of twisted plant fibres attached.
An unusual, old example of a 'Kundu'-drum with colour scuffed, some small pieces broken off at the lower edge and on the decorative bulge, and with an excellent, old usage patina.
Late 19th century to early 20th century; H: 43 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian Private Collection.
