Kakame' or 'Imunu' figures in the form of a dog with raised hind leg, carved from a forked mangrove branch (in this manner, figural ‘spirit figures’ are also produced).
The ‘Kakame dog’ is made of hard, heavy wood, with open maw including tongue. The fur is suggested by decorative volutes and curving meander relief, partly dyed black.
Among the Kerewa, such ‘Kakame-dogs’ and ‘Imunu-spirits’ are placed in palm groves to assure the growth and fertility of the plants.
An object with fine patina and some damage owing to age (cracks, ears broken, and lost).
First half of the 20th century, H: 62 cm, L: 100 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Dr. Klaus Spiess Collection, Vienna.
Lit.: ‘New Guinea Art’ by Marcia and John Friede, ill.: 455 (‘Imunu’-spirit figure).
