Indonesia, Mentawai islands: A ‘buoy’ for a turtle net, with a crouching figure.
The inhabitants of the Mentawai islands, south-west of Sumatra and south of the island of Nias, traditionally catch sea-turtles with gill nets. The upper edges of these nets have such ‘buoys’ attached, so that part of the net stays on the surface and also in order to retrieve it. This round ‘Mentawai buoy’ is made of very lightweight wood and displays a finely carved, crouching figure on top. An older piece, with a continuous hole in the lower part to fasten the net, and typical, grey weathering from seawater and long use. The left arm of the figure is broken (forearm missing), otherwise in good condition.
