Batak, Sumatra, Indonesia: A sword of the Toba Batak, with a thick ivory grip.
A typical, old sword of the Toba Batak, called a ‘piso gading’. From Lake Toba in central Sumatra. With a long, narrow and single-edged blade made out of locally forged iron. The blade is curved toward the point on the cutting side, its straight back broadens towards the hilt, which lies on an offset, four-sided part of the blade.
The round, 11 cm long hilt slightly retracts in the centre and consists of a large piece of ivory, which is already darkened to honey-yellow due to age and displays a beautiful, old shiny patina.
A very elegant, characteristic Batak sword. Without scabbard. With minor age damage (cracks on the hilt).
Before or around 1900. L: 66.5 cm (in total). (ME) ASA
Lit.: ‘Batak’ by Achim Sibeth, ill. 212(a).
