Indonesia, Java: A half-mask from the traditional mask theatre ‘wayang topeng’.
An interesting, old half-mask from the Javanese ‘wayang topeng’ mask theatre. Carved from lightweight wood and coloured black and red on the front. The mask’s forehead has an adornment in the form of a blossom and leaf made of metal (silver?).
The rear is unpainted and shows an old usage patina. Slight scuffing on the front. This half mask probably depicts a retainer or servant of prince Panji.
First half of the 20th century; H: c. 16 cm, W: 16 cm. (ME)
