Lotto No. 227

Nepal: A rare shaman mask from western Nepal, created out of an old tree trunk.

Nepal: A rare shaman mask from western Nepal, created out of an old tree trunk. - Arte Tribale

In western Nepal, in the valleys and foothills of the Himalayas (the so-called “Middle Hills”), the old, pre-Buddhist shamanism still exists amongst the tribes of the Magar, Gurung and others. With their shamans, drums, dream-trances into “other worlds” – and their masks (see catalogue no. 226). The mask presented here is idiosyncratic: it was created out of an old, natural tree trunk. With its short, wide nose, round eyes, and down-turned mouth, the eyes, nostrils and two attachment holes at left and right were carved into the the natural growth of the tree trunk; finally, the front side was coloured in black.
The mask was in use for a long time, as the patina on its reverse reveals. Only minimal, insignificant damage (2 small losses at the edge). A rare, highly original piece.
First third of the 20th century; H: 19 cm; W: 25 cm. (ME)

Lit.: 'Masks of the Himalayas' by Francois Pannier, fig. 68.
