India: A ‘heavenly musician’ made of wood, an old wall applique from a Hindu temple, c. 18th century. - Arte Tribale

A sitting ‘heavenly musician’, originally in the act of playing a stringed instrument (broken).
An impressively carved figure made of very hard, brown wood. With a ‘crown’ on the head, the ‘Tika’ on the forehead (the symbol of Hindu believers, made of red sandalwood paste), adorned with ear pendants and clothed in a wrap dress (sari). Flanked by a sitting bird (a peacock?) holding a fruit in his beak, to the right, and with a plant with a blossom to the left.
The underside of this exquisitely crafted wall appliqué is adorned with a relief of symmetrical arranged leaves. Two fastening eyelets.
An old piece with partly shiny patina on the front and back, and with some age-related damage (some pieces of the stringed instrument and of the left hand broken off, some tears).
Between the 18th and the early 19th century; H: 28 cm. (ME)
