India: An Indo-Persian miniature painting, ‘Maharajah with women in a garden’, 18th/19th century, Rajasthan style.
A page with an Indo-Persian miniature. This charming, very finely executed work depicts a Maharajah in the garden of his palace, surrounded by six beautiful women. The ‘favourite’ among them kneels on a cushion, delicately embraced in the ruler’s arms. Two of the remaining five women make music on stringed instruments, whilst a third woman offers the Maharajah a beverage.
Both above and under the painted and graphically framed scene are three-line inscriptions in Arabic characters (probably in the Persian language). The miniature itself is surrounded by individual, ‘scattered’ flowers with red, white and blue blossoms.
This sheet in the tradition of Moghul painting comes from West India, in the style of Rajasthan. With small, age-related damage to the paper (slightly yellowed, some staining and traces of insects).
Under glass, in a modern frame.
Between the late 18th and the 19th century; dimensions: c. 37 cm x 20 cm (the Indo-Persian miniature alone); 41 cm x 31 cm (frame). (ME)
