Uzbeks, Turkmens, Tajiks: Traditional summer frock for young women, dyed in Ikat technique.
A summer dress (not lined!) made of silk, in Ikat technique (the warp threads are bound off and dyed before the weaving). From Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan or northern Afghanistan (called ‘Chapan’ or ‘Khalat’).
Red and yellow colour shades are typical of young women’s clothing. In vertical stripes, with ram’s head motif, green borders with tassels, embroidered with yellow and white.
Among the centres famous for Ikat dyeing in the Orient were the oases of Bokhara, Samarkand, Tashkent and others along the ‘silk road’.
