An old round shield, called ‘Gatchena’, made of thick buffalo leather, coloured dark brown. With a robust thick rim and a high central shield boss with finial. Décor: all-round, hallmarked circular lines with fine hatchings; the shield boss finished with embossed spikes at the base. On the reverse: a robust grip made of leather.
With good, old traces of usage. Minor age-related damage to the surface of the shield (a small hole, possibly a spear puncture?).
Between the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century; diameter: 53 cm.
Provenance: From the estate of Italian Colonel Giuseppe Polacco, who lived in in Eritrea (Ethiopia) between 1925 and 1943. (ME)
