Ethiopia: A charming small image with two figures painted on parchment (animal skin).
The scene probably derives from a ‘Bible’ of the Christian Ethiopian Church. It depicts two very similar figures (monks, priests or ‘saints’), carrying a hand cross in their left hand. With one line in Ethiopian script in the upper section, flanked by black motifs of entwined bands and spikes. Under glass, with gilt frame. 19th century (a label on the reverse of the painting carries the date ‘16th century’; however, the expert at the Dorotheum in Vienna considers this date to be incorrect).
Dimensions: 9.3 cm x 9.7 cm (painting on parchment), 17.8 cm x 16.4 cm (frame). (ME)
