A beautiful old mask carved from lightweight, light-coloured wood. Stylistically, it can be attributed to the northwestern Congo tribes of the Ngbandi, Ngbaka or Ngombe.
The face is concave and dyed red by means of powdered redwood. With rectangular eyes and a long nose. The areas around the eyes, nose and forehead are contoured and accentuated with double lines in relief, coloured by means of kaolin. The open mouth with complete rows of inserted teeth, the bas-relief ears as well as the outer margin of the mask are black. A piece with good usage patina and minor age-related damage (colour slightly scuffed, two small pieces broken off on the upper and lower back rim).
First third of the 20th century; H: 28.5 cm. (ME)
