Bena Lulua (or Lulua), Dem. Rep. of Congo: A typical female figure, with a long neck and a dense pattern of scarification marks.
Among the Bena Lulua in southern and central Congo, personal protective figures, such as the present ones, are believed to ensure good fortune, health and beauty. In particular, they are thought to protect pregnant women and children.
The present sculpture displays of the characteristic style of the Lulua: a relatively small head with crested coiffure and two lateral plaits, a long neck and an elongated body with accentuated abdomen and navel (a pregnant woman?). The legs are short and slightly angled, the upper arms long and bent, the hands hold the accentuated abdomen. Something (probably a child?) rests on the figure’s left forearm.
Also in keeping with the typical Lulua style is the execution of the familiar pattern of dense scarification marks of the women of this tribe: on the forehead, on both cheeks, on the long neck as well as on the lower abdomen. Overall a convincing, striking example of the specific style of the Lulua. With black, shiny, thick patina and remains of powdered redwood.
Minor age-related cracks to the nose and some pieces broken off on both feet.
