A typical chief mask of the West Pende, made of lightweight wood, coloured black and white on the front side. With all the typical features of the Pende style: the high, large and arched forehead with scarification marks, the consistent line of the eyebrows above large, lowered eyelids, a nose turned slightly upwards and a pointed chin. The eyes, ears, the rows of teeth in the open mouth, as well as the tattoos on both cheeks are white accentuated.
The hair of brown raffia fabric, with four pointed tips made of black plant fibres, as well as a black goatee denote this mask as ‘Mbuya Phumbu’ or ‘Mbuya Fumbu’ type, which always represents a chief in the mask dances of the West Pende.
A piece with old usage patina on the outside as well as on the inside.
