Baule, Ivory Coast: Ceremonial rod of a dignitary, with a carved female figure in the upper section, masks and stools.
Rod from the property of a chief or other dignitary of the Baule people. In the upper section, atop a globular pommel and a short, round plinth stands a whole female figure in typical Baule style, with finely executed hairstyle and scarification marks on the face as well as on the body. Four more all-round mask faces and three honorary stools are carved in relief along the wooden shaft down to the iron ‘shoe’ with a long iron point.
A symbol of the power, esteem and dignity of a Baule man, with good, old usage patina. No significant damage. First half of the 20th century; L: 131 cm. (ME)
