Baule, Ivory Coast: A female figure of a ‘spirit spouse’, called ‘Blolo Bla’.
A relatively small figure of a ‘spirit spouse’. Every married, adult male of the Baule has a ‘Blolo Bla’, such as the present one, in the ‘other world of spirits’ (the afterlife, the ‘bush’, etc.) He can communicate with her, ask her for advice and discuss problems. The present, standing, small ‘Blolo Bla’ figure is made of hard wood and was originally dyed black. With relatively simple Baule hairstyle and with typical tribal scarification marks on the face as well as on the body.
With visible usage patina.
