Dan, Ivory Coast, Liberia: a small miniature or passport mask, ‘Ma go’.
Mask type: ‘Deangle’. The men of the Dan who have the right to appear with a very specific mask type – in the present case a ‘Deangle mask’ – can carry ‘their’ mask with themselves in a small format in everyday life or when travelling. The miniature version functions as an amulet or ‘identification’. Miniature or passport masks, such as the present one, are called ‘Ma’ or ‘Ma go’.
The present ‘Deangle Ma go’ is made of hard wood, coloured black and brown, and displays good usage patina. No damage.
