Ngere, also We or Guéré, Ivory Coast: A miniature mask, called ‘Ma’ or ‘Ma go’ (small head). - Arte Tribale

Among the tribes of the Dan group, to which the Ngere or We also belong, men dance with very specific types of large face masks. These masks are their personal or inherited property. The men have the right to commission miniature versions, such as the present one, of their own mask types. Such miniatures are used as protective amulets or ‘identification’ when on travels. Miniature masks also play a role during sacred initiation rituals.
The present miniature mask of the Ngere is a very beautiful, stylistically perfect specimen. Made of wood, dyed black, with visibly old usage patina. No damage.
First half of the 20th century; H: 12 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Galerie Pierre Robin, Paris; Viennese Private Collection.

Lit.: 'Die Kunst der Dan' by Fischer & Himmelheber, Rietberg Museum, Zurich, fig. 106–139.
