A Dan mask of the so-called ‘fire runners’ (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 33). Carved from hard wood and coloured black and brown. With characteristically large, round eyes (here outlined with small holes), with short, naturalistic nose, an open mouth with pouting lips and an offset chin. In addition to fastening eyelets for the mask costume all along the outer rim, the present mask also features hole rows used for attaching hair above the typically arched forehead and a beard made of plant fibres to the chin.
This ‘classical’ mask of the Dan displays an old collection number ‘1093’ written in white on the inside, on the back rim. A stylistically perfect piece with good usage patina on the front and back. No damage.
First half of the 20th century; H: 24.3 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Austrian Private Collection.
Lit.: 'Die Kunst der Dan' by Eberhard Fischer and Hans Himmelheber, Museum Rietberg Zurich, fig. 45, 50, 54, 58.
