A fine, small stool of the Dogon in Mali. Carved from hard wood. Between the round seat and the round base plate are four abstract, stylised supporting figures, two male and two female. The outer borders of both boards display a decorative zigzag relief. Carved from a single piece of wood. With smooth, old usage patina on the seat, otherwise a slightly encrusted patina with some smooth glossy areas to the typical Dogon figures (as a result of frequent touching), as well as with some age-related damage as a result of intense protracted use (one crack to the seat and one to the base plate, some light, small cracks to the upper section as well as to the edges).
First half of the 20th century; H: 18 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Austrian Private Collection.
Lit.: 'Afrikanische Sitze' by Sandro Bocola, fig. 30.
