Fragment of a chasuble orphrey,
c. 107 x 78 cm (incl. linen), Florence (Italy), about 1480 - 1515, the silk and gold embroidery on a linen base, partly with silver and golden membrane wrapped around a white silk core, was originally a parament decoration and was subsequently mounted on the back part of a chasuble as a cross, on the vertical long side two niches with images of saints are still preserved; as was customary at that time, the figures were manufactured on a separate ground and later applied onto the architectural elements; the two angels on the crossbar derive from another piece of the period and are coarsely embroidered in ‘Arab technique’, especially worth mentioning is the good condition of the central orphrey with only minor signs of wear in the pattern and a strikingly three-dimensional effect, entirely mounted on linen.
