The composition of this painting depicting three of the nine Muses of classical antiquity strongly resembles Rode’s allegories. Rode, a student of Antoine Pesne, became know for his allegories and histories which - in keeping with the art theories of the enlightenment thinker Friedrich Nicolai from Berlin – he sought to translate into the formal language of Neoclassicism. As director of the Academy, he was one of the most influential policy makers of the late- and post-Frederician era of art. The muses are Polyhymnia, muse of hymns and rhetoric, Clio, muse of heroic poetry and history, and Urania, muse of astronomy.
