We are grateful to Ute Mannhardt, who confirmed this to be a painting by Denner, for her assistance in researching its provenance. She will publish it in her catalogue raisonné of Balthasar Denner currently under preparation. According to Mannhardt the present painting is listed both at the Witt Library, London, and at the RKD as a work by Denner. Balthasar Denner was one of a very few North German portrait painters who enjoyed Europe-wide recognition during the 18th century. Having only recently started to attract the renewed interest of the art-historical inquiry, his œuvre is undergoing a long overdue reassessment.
