The present work is related to two paintings of the same format, a Fortuna and a Male Figure (Fototeca Zeri, Inv. 37678, Inv. 37679). The three panels were probably all part of the same larger commission. In late 15th century Siena it was customary to furnish the interior of palaces, in particular the bedchambers, with heroic scenes and exemplary individuals from antiquity, to serve as ‘exempla virtutis’.
The present painting is registered at the Fototeca Zeri as Bartolomeo Neroni known as il Riccio, under the number 37677.
