Andrea del Minga
(Florence 1535–1596)
St Agnes,
oil on panel, 57,5 x 40,8 cm, framed
We are grateful to Roberto Ciabattini, who suggested the attribution of the painting at hand based on a digital photograph.
Andrea del Minga was a Florentine painter of the Studiolo circle, mentioned by Giorgio Vasari as a student of Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio and Vicenzo Borghini among Michele Tosini’s collaborators (cf. A. Nesi, Andrea del Minga: un pittore dello studiolo tra „calunnia“ e… Fortuna, Florence 2014, p 11). The present small-format painting matches the work of this artist, in particular the Virgin and Child with Infant St John at the Pinacoteca Comunale in Castiglion Fiorentino, eg. with regard to the Virgin’s features and the sky in the background, rose-tinted such as at dawn or dusk (cf. A. Nesi, ibid, 2014, p 18, ill. 15). The pose of St Agnes’ left hand resting on her chest recalls another Virgin and Child with infant St John (cf. A. Nesi, ibid, 2014, p 78, ill. 97).
