(Hamburg 1658–1724 Vienna)
A still life of flowers with carnations, roses, lilies, and morning glories,
oil on canvas, 92.5 x 65.5 cm, framed
Franz Werner von Tamm was trained as a history painter under Johann Pfeiffer. He later switched to decorative flower and fruit painting and lived in Rome between 1685 and 1695, where he worked in the workshop of Mario Nuzzi. The latter’s influence is also betrayed in the present painting. It probably dates from the beginning of Tamm’s Viennese period (from 1695 onwards). Echoing Italian decorative painting, Tamm focused on the meticulous rendering of individual flowers in his compositions. This effect of ‘differentiated focusing’ lent his paintings the illusion of spatial depth. Among Tamm’s patrons were the imperial family and the Prince of Liechtenstein. The Liechtenstein Collection still holds twenty-four of his decorative still lifes.
