Jacob Savery

[Saleroom Notice]
Jacob Savery - Dipinti antichi

(Courtrai c. 1565–1603 Amsterdam)
Landscape with a village and a walled-in town in the background and huntsmen in the foreground,
monogrammed in the lower left: JS
oil on panel, 9.7 x 12.4 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Belgium

The present painting is accompanied by a written report by Luuk Pijl (December 2014).

After his first training under his father, Jacob Savery, the elder brother of Roelant Savery, entered the workshop of Hans Bol. He later moved to Haarlem and subsequently to Amsterdam for religious reasons. His oeuvre largely consists of gouaches based on the example of Hans Bol. The attribution of this miniature-like and delicate landscape to Jacob Savery is based on the comparison with a larger work by this artist that was sold at Christie’s, London, on 8 December 1995 as lot 4 (cf. J. Briel, Vlaamse schilders in de Noordelijke Nederlanden in het begin van de Gouden Eeuw, Antwerp, 1987, p. 310, fig. 385). Both landscapes are likely to have been executed in the early 1590s, when Savery was already living in Amsterdam.
