Vicenzo Caprile
(Naples 1856–1936)
Canal in Venice, signed V. Caprile, oil on canvas, 53.3 x 65.5 cm, framed, (GG)
Vincenzo Caprile began his artistic career in 1874 enrolling as a student in the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. There he studied under Gabriele Smargiassi (1798–1882) then with the most celebrated teacher and artist Domenico Morelli (1823–1901). He met fellow artists Vincenzo Irolli (1860–1949), Atillio Pratella (1856–1949), Francesco Paolo Michetti (1851–1929) and Edoardo Dalbono (1841–1915).
The present lot is a beautiful example of Venetian view painting. Every day life is the topic of this composition. It was made on the spot. He chose not to paint one of the most frequented sites of the city but a canal away from the tourist district. It depicts an antique shop. The entrance is separated from the bridge. On the balcony hangs a few colorful chasuble , above a couple of different sizes incense-burner and below two large baskets. On the outside wall hangs also a mirror, a frame and two paintings are on view. Through the windows of the shop some porcelains and other objects are visible.
Vincenzo Caprile was one of many artists from all over Europe to settle in Venice not only for the beauty of the city but also for commercial reasons. Indeed the demand for views of the city was highly popular and sought after by the newly enriched European bourgeoisie.
