Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire, was built in the 14th century on an island situated on the biggest lake of the valley of Mexico. It was the grandest city in Pre-Columbian America, ingeniously built and connected to the mainland by large causeways. After the Spaniards conquered the empire they built their own city of Mexico over Tenochtitlan and, in order to avoid the frequent floods and accommodate the growing city, gradually dried out the lake, reshaping the landscape of the Mexican plateau. The present work shows a panoramic view of the valley of Mexico, with Mexico City and lake Texcoco as it once was.
