Large Baroque “Warenschlange”
Styria ca. 1730–50, carved wood, in the form of a moving sea serpent with dragon’s head, mouth wide open showing teeth, scales and fins carved in three dimensions, polychrome painted, length 167 cm, iron hook, small parts missing and some restoration, painting retouched, rare and unusual object (MC)
Provenance: Austrian private property. “Warenschlangen” were hung over the counter in grocers and apothecaries. They served as advertising and identification of the particular business and also as a decorative stand on which all sorts of things could be hung up. Serpents were the preferred form, but winged dragons, fish and mermaids were also used..
