circular body with polychrome-painted image, ‘Rape of the daughters of Leucippus’ after Rubens, signed right, H. Serle, Ø 50 cm, with frame 102 x 89 cm, porcelain presumably Bohemia, 2nd half of 19th cent. (Ru)
Peter Paul Rubens, Siegen 28.6.1577–30.5.1640 Antwerp, Flemish painter, circa 1618 painted ‘Rape of the daughters of Leucippus’, today in the Alte Pinakotek in Munich;
Castor and Pollux, sons of Leda and Zeus, carried off Hilaeira and Phoebe, daughters of King Leucippus of Argos, shortly before their marriages. Rubens succeeds in arranging his masterpiece, featuring four people in motion and two horse, on a square picture plane, so that it fills the entire image and yet manages to retain a certain level of naturalism at the same time. The artist employs a sophisticated choreography for this group to achieve this.
