glass, colourless, slightly conical shape with fitted lip edge and inserted medallion on side and base, lip with gold edges, border of gold blossoms on red band, inside inscription that cannot be deciphered, diamond cut pendant border and on the reverse coat-of-arms of the office of the Reichsmarschall as well as the duchies of Saxony, Jülich, Kleve and Berg, front bearing an oval medallion with portrait of a lady in profile, gold foliate border all round, cord and gold edge on red band, framed by olive cut corona, on the reverse “Verfertigt zu Gutenbrunn im Fürnbergischen grossen Weinspergwald 1796 von Mildner” on silver ground, base of body with cut décor and cut pinhead flowers, base with round medallion, inside with depiction etched in gold of St. Anthony with blossom branch and crucifix in his hands, outside landscape with Amor, he is holding apples in his hands, probably as a reference to the temptation of St. Anthony, height 12 cm, inside rim scuffed, inscription hard to read, portrait with slight craquelure, Johann Josef Mildner, Kaltenberg 1765–1808 Gutenbrunn, Lower Austria, dated 1796 (Ru)

Johann Josef Mildner is the most significant glass artist of the time around 1800. Dated works from 1787 to 1807 document the last phase of his artistic work. The circumstances of his education are not known. All Mildner glasses that are hitherto known were made at the Lower Austrian village of Gutenbrunn, in the Weinsberger Wald forest north of Melk monastery.
