Gerd Knäpper, who was born in Wuppertal took courses in ceramics in Europe and the USA and then went to Japan in order to complete his training. On the recommendation of Bernard Leach, he trained under Tatsuzo Shimaoka in Mashiko. In 1971, he entered a work anonymously as a European into the Biennale, ‘Japan Ceramic Exhibition’, winning the 1st prize for traditional Japanese ceramics.
