Rare lacquer relief in the style of a Dutch genre scene of the 17th century, depicting a pair of Chinese figures

Rare lacquer relief in the style of a Dutch genre scene of the 17th century, depicting a pair of Chinese figures - Arte asiatica

China, Qing dynasty, 18th/19th century. Wood, relief work, lacquer paint and soapstone appliqué. The woman is seated on a Chinese chair at a Chinese table, on which a book is lying alongside a teapot and cups. The man standing to her side holds a candlestick in his right hand, shading his eyes from the light with his left hand. In the background, a Netherlandish landscape painting can be seen, alongside a Chinese bookshelf, on which right at the top, there is a Chinese plucked zither (qin), a vase with smoking utensils, a censer and a box below, a cabinet with Chinese books, a tin box and right at the bottom a melon and a fingered citron. On the black-and-white tiled floor, a sleeping dog curled up. A green curtain, tied to the right-hand side can be seen in the foreground. The heads and hands of the figures are in soapstone, the frame being integrated into the wooden panel. Age damage and traces of use. 35 x 28 cm. (BA)

It is very likely that this image is based on engravings of 17th century paintings, such as, for instance, the oil painting by Jan Vermeer (1658–1660) ‘Gentleman and lady drinking wine’ (Gemäldegalerie der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz inv. no. 912C).
