A stele depicting Shiva and Parvati (Uma-Maheshvara) - Arte asiatica

Central India, c. 12. century. Reddish sandstone. The horseshoe-shaped stele depicts Shiva and Parvati embracing one another tenderly in high relief. They are both seated on their mounts, Shiva on the bull and Parvati on the lion. Her folded right leg rests on his left leg, also folded. Both support each other with their other legs as they sit on a base ornamented with flowers. Shiva gently strokes Parvati’s chin, his other arm encircling her and touching her breast, in his third hand, he holds a cobra over her left shoulder and in his fourth hand, he holds his trishula. Parvati has wrapped one arm around his neck, and holds a mirror in the other. The small figure to the lower centre, who holds onto the animals, is Bhringi, one of the couple’s sons. To the right and left, at the couple’s feet, other figures can be seen, including Ganesha, Parvati’s elephant-headed son. Several missing parts. Restored diagonal crack through the stele in the lower third of the piece. Height: 67 cm; width: 63.5 cm, depth: 20 cm. (BA)
