(Goes 1583–1649)
Samson and Delilah,
signed and dated lower left: C. Eversdyck / 1627
oil on canvas, 139 x 170 cm, unframed
The carpet on which the protagonists recline can be identified as a work from Oudernaarde-Edingen and/or Bruges and probably dates from the last quarter of the 16th century or the first quarter of the 17th century. The prominent pattern of foliate and floral motifs and fruit is typical of the period in question. The depiction of the hare might refer to a family coat of arms.
Saleroom notice
The painting is signed and dated lower left: C. Eversdyck / 1627
We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution to Cornelis Eversdyck (Goes 1583–1649) on the basis of a photograph.
The present painting is heavily influenced by Italian models: large, brawny figures determine the foreground, while the composition, featuring the seated Delilah and Samson in her lap, seems to be based on Rubens’s outstanding composition now in the Nat
