Lotto No. 38

Manner of Anthonis van Dyck

Manner of Anthonis van Dyck - Dipinti antichi

Lady Dorothy Sydney (1617–1684), Lady Spencer, the later Countess of Sunderland,
oil on canvas, 110 x 80 cm, framed

The present painting is based on Van Dyck’s portrait of Lady Dorothy Spencer in the collection of the Viscount de L‘Isle in Penshurst Place, its format slightly differing from the latter. In 1635, Lady Dorothy Sydney declined a proposal for marriage made by the writer Edmund Waller, who had dedicated numerous of his poems to her. In 1639 she married Henry, 3rd Lord Spencer of Wormleighton, who became 1st Earl of Sunderland in 1643. The present painting shows her as a shepherdess holding a hoe and a pink rose, the attribute of Venus, the goddess of love, in one hand. Lord Spencer was killed in the First Battle of Newbury, leaving behind his pregnant wife and two children. The widow lived in Brington, Northamptonshire; it is also possible that she returned to her parental home in Penshurst Place, Kent.
