Tapestry,
Brussels (Netherlands), c. 304 x 330 cm, second half of the 16th century, the tapestry illustrates the story of David who, after slaying Goliath, is put in charge of the army by King Saul and permitted to live in the royal palace. King Saul, sitting under a canopy with his following, commands the troop leader Abner to place the helmet upon David’s head, thus appointing him commander-in-chief of the army. The two protagonists are recognisable thanks to the inscriptions ‘David’ and ‘Saul’ respectively. The border is monumental, with open design in keeping with the decorative taste of that time. The carpet is preserved in superb condition, wholly complete and without any major visible repairs. Slight edge damage - the addition of a supporting linen is recommended. (MA)
