2009, for Vorwerk, Germany, grey coated Forma material, laser-cut perforations, diameter 347.6 cm. (DRAX)
Prototype of a limited edition, with a design drawing of 31 July 2009.
The carpet represents the moon on a scale of 1:1,000,000. Its landscape of craters, as it was transmitted via satellite photography, has been rendered in the form of laser-cut perforations.
‘The moon, referred to as Luna by the Romans and associated with Selene and Artemis by the Greeks, has various names in other mythologies. The moon has been known since prehistoric times and is the brightest object in the sky behind the sun. Since the moon turns around the earth once a month, the angle between earth, moon, and sun constantly changes, which can be seen in the cycles of the lunar phases. The moon, with its uneven and scarred surface, has been the conceptual starting point for the project and is simultaneously a metaphor for perforation, which has been translated here into the second dimension, so that fascinating patterns and unusual views have been created within the textile surface.’ (Martin Mostböck)
