1850, manufactured by Gebrüder Thonet, Vienna, c. 1883/85, bent and stained beech, ring stretcher, woven cane seat and backrest, both with impressed factory stamp: THONET, one chair with fragments of Thonet trademark no. 2, height 95 cm, width 43 cm, depth 52 cm, height of seat 48 cm. (DRAX)
This design, albeit as a somewhat heavier and more compact version and without the circular stretcher, was first included in Thonet’s programme in 1859 and presented at the Paris World’s Fair of 1862. Based on the ‘Liechtenstein’ chairs, it was initially produced in laminated wood and only from the 1860s onwards made in solid wood. Apart from Models Nos. 9 and 13, chair No. 6 ranked among the most expensive chairs in Thonet’s product range: it was three times as expensive as the popular Model No. 14.
