manufactured by the August Kitschelt hardware factory, Vienna, for the First World’s Fair in London in 1851, profiled tubular metal, cast zinc ornaments in the style of the 18th century, the upholstery replaced, height 96 cm, width 57 cm, depth 79 cm, height of seat 41 cm. (DRAX)
In 1851, August Kitschelt’s metal furniture and some luxurious bentwood models by Michael Thonet were chosen to present the latest trends in Austrian furniture production at the London World’s Fair of 1851, where they could measure themselves against international competitors. The ensemble exhibited by Kitschelt comprised a lady’s desk, an armchair and footrest, and a decorative vase. Kitschelt was the leading metal furniture manufacturer of the time. The company’s innovative products were not so much used outdoors, but for interiors and made their appearance in all of the period’s major exhibitions.
