New Guinea, Highlands, tribe: Dani; a child’s carrier bag, covered with dove’s feathers.
A child’s small carrier net (‘bilum’), made of a loose meshwork of twisted plant fibre cords. With carrying strap attached to it, and a thick décor of greyish black dove’s feathers. ‘Bilums’ are used everywhere in New Guinea, and carried with the strap on the head (see photo). A piece with noticeable traces of usage. L: 42 cm (in total), W: 24 cm. (ME)
