New Guinea or New Britain: a cassowary bone dagger with carved decorations.
An old bone dagger, carved from the thighbone of a cassowary bird. The outside displays an asymmetrical, marked relief of lines and dots (depicting figures?). The upper end of the dagger is enveloped with black tree resin and carved in relief in the upper section (two animals?). A small wooden stick is attached to the upper section as reinforcement. Daggers such as this one were carried by men. They are attached to bracelets made of braided rattan, worn on the upper arm. A very carefully crafted item with visibly very old usage patina. Only minor age damage (small loss to the upper margin). Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century; L: 30 cm. (ME) ASA
