Dayak, Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia: A ‘hampatong’ figure of the Kenyah-Kayan-Dayak.

Dayak, Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia: A ‘hampatong’ figure of the Kenyah-Kayan-Dayak. - Tribal Art

‘Hampatong’ is the term used for ancestor and protective figures made of hard ‘iron wood’, which the Dayak of Borneo set up at burial places as memorial sculptures in honour of the dead, or in front of their longhouses as guardians. The present ‘hampatong’, very finely and carefully crafted, originally had two horizontally projecting arms, inserted to the left and right (both of which are now lost). This sculpture hence belongs to the group of ‘hampatong pantak’, responsible for the protection of the village against evil spirits. The gesture of the arms stretched out to the left and to the right refers to a ritual dance of the Dayak, in which with similar movements good, helpful spirits are invited to visit the Dayak.
Style: Kenyah-Kayan-Dayak complex in West Borneo. A sculpture of special artistic quality! Only the arms are missing. Otherwise minor age-related damage. Between the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century; H: 137 cm. (ME)

Provenance: René Clemencic Collection.
